Jeppe Hein Benches

With the series Modified Social Benches, Jeppe Hein (b. 1974, Denmark) combines social elements with more whimsical ideas. A series of benches have been created, all which take the basic concept of a bench—a seating platform that can be used by multiple people at the same time—and turns it on its head. By using unexpected shapes such as half circles, swirling patterns, sharp angles, odd bends and unusual placement, the benches become beautiful objects while still being able to serve their original purpose. These electrifying alterations change the way in which we sit on the benches, and in so doing, change the ways in which we interact with those that we sit on benches. The result of Hein’s series is an awareness of human interaction, and an awareness of how our bodies and our position has a great impact.
