Michael
Elmgreen & Ingar Dragset
April 21 - May 26 2001
Opening Friday April 21 from 16-19
It is a great pleasure to present an exhibition with new works by
Michael Elmgreen & Ingar Dragset.
In the main space seven false doors are installed - doors which
you can't use, as their function and design are slightly altered.
One door is equipped with door handles and hinges at both ends of
the door.
Another door won't ever be able to open since its door handle is
placed on the wall right next to it. And in between a pair of cornered
doors a safety chain is suspended, linking the doors together as
a pierced couple.
A room is often defined by its shape and measurements, its walls,
floor and ceiling. In this case the room is defined by its accessibility:
Who and how many we let into the space defines whether it's a private
or a public space and makes the simple distinction between venues
for popular culture and for fine arts. The door symbolizes a potential
of openness but it also reflects a possible exclusion.
In Elmgreen & Dragset's new works all the small displacements remind
us of how we on a daily basis try to surround ourselves with security
- a number of crazy tools invented to please our paranoia.
Elmgreen & Dragset were nominated for last year's Hugo Boss Prize.
They have since 1997 shown their Powerless Structures at venues
such as the first Berlin Biennial (98), Musee d'art Moderne de la
ville de Paris (98), The Project in New York (99), Moderna Museet
in Stockholm (00), MIT in Boston (01) and recently at Portikus in
Frankfurt (01). The artist duo will later this year take part in
the Istanbul Biennial and in November they will have their first
solo show in Switzerland, at Kunsthalle Zurich.
We welcome
you in the gallery
Kind regards
