Chris
Johanson
&
Solo Soul Solo Show
From November 17th to December 22nd 2006
It is a great pleasure for Galleri Nicolai Wallner to present a
solo exhibition with Chris Johanson. In connection with the exhibition
Johanson has also curated Solo Show Solo Soul introducing four young
American artists.
Known for his bittersweet commentaries on the self-concept of contemporary
America, Chris Johanson creates his vibrantly colored paintings
and installations on the basis of found materials and reclaimed
wood. He works figuratively but also with a recurring abstract imagery
that allow him to explore what lies beneath the anxieties of ordinary
life.
The sprawling installation presents a circular stage caught within
a square, the two forms representing a meeting between the organic
and the systematic. The paintings and drawings are connected with
intersecting beams of grey painted wood pointing to the collective
way the individual pieces work together in creating a bigger narrative.
Chris Johanson (b. 1968) lives and works in Portland (Oregon). Johanson
has exhibited extensively throughout Europe and North America. Recent
solo exhibitions include Vancouver Art Gallery, Museum of Contemporary
Art (San Diego), SITE Santa Fe, SFMOMA (San Francisco), and UCLA
Hammer Museum (Los Angeles).
The works have been created in Copenhagen this autumn at Statens
Værksteder, Gl. Dok. This is Chris Johanson's first solo exhibition
in Scandinavia.
Solo Show Solo Soul presents: Dana Dart-McLean, Christopher Garret,
Bob Linder, and Dash Snow.
We are happy to welcome you in the gallery.
With kind regards,
Galleri Nicolai Wallner
