The
Known and the Unknown
A group show curated by Jonathan
Monk and Claus Robenhagen
From July 7 - August 12 2006
It is a great pleasure
for Galleri Nicolai Wallner to present "The Known and the Unknown",
a group exhibition that takes place in the gallery during the summer.
"The Known and the Unknown" brings together artists in
different ages and career stages. They navigate between the analytical
and the intuitive, many of them using the supposedly "dry"
and intellectual strategies of conceptual art established in the
1960's. The artists map the area between the known and unknown in
a way that fuels the imagination and offer various interpretations.
As shown in Joachim Koester's photo of the magic mirror of Elizabethan
sorcerer John Dee or Armin Boehm's strangely apocalyptic pastoral,
the span between the known and the unknown can be understood in
mystic or even Romantic terms. Like Simon Dybbroe M¿ller's flaring
northern lights, they represent a view into an enigmatic netherworld
existing on the border of everyday life.
Others work
more prosaically with the theme of the exhibition. Pierre Bismuth
contrasts the famous and the anonymous in his Finn Rüdinger
T-shirts by taking the name of an unknown Dane and dispersing it
by print. Daniel Buren's 8,7 cm stripes represent a determined repetition
of an already known strategy. Created especially for this exhibition,
the work is instantly recognizable as a Buren by some - while others
might just enjoy the aesthetics of a rhythmic pattern on the wall.
Both Torben Ribe and artist group A Kassen play with what we see
and what we don't see. Torben Ribe's installation shows us works
of art in different circumstances; wrapped, from the back or standing
on the floor. The artist insists in defining his works as objects.
Discrete, blending with their surroundings the works of A Kassen
offer rich and humorous stories closing in on the absurd.
Artists in the exhibition include: Torben Ribe (DK), A Kassen (DK),
Simon Dybbroe M¿ller (DK), Armin Boehm (DE), Pierre Bismuth (BE),
Mathew Sawyer (CA), Ceal Floyer (GB), Ian Wilson (US), Gary Rough
(GB), Dan Rees (GB), Isabell Heimerdinger (DE), Joachim Koester
(DK), Lawrence Weiner (US), and Daniel Buren (FR).
"The Known and the Unknown" is curated by English artist
Jonathan Monk and Claus Robenhagen of Galleri Nicolai Wallner.
We are happy to welcome you in the gallery.
With kind regards,
Galleri Nicolai Wallner
