Pouls Papirperformance (1967)

Poul Gernes

Black and white film, mute, 2’10”
Filmed by Ole Schelde

One of Gernes’ best known happenings performed in 1967 at Toftevang School was “Papirperformance” (Paper Performance), in which Gernes winds himself up from a big roll of thick brown wrapping paper until he is entirely covered and then cuts himself free from his cocoon by using a pocket knife. The film belongs to a small group of works focused on self-exploration which emerged around the same time of his large systematic series of masonite paintings with stripes, checks and circles.
